Garlic Health Benefits
Garlic is a nutritious food with several evidence-based health benefits, although it is not a cure for disease.
Some of its main benefits include:
- Supports heart health: Garlic may help lower blood pressure (especially in people with high blood pressure) and modestly reduce LDL ("bad") cholesterol, which may reduce the risk of heart disease.
- Rich in antioxidants: It contains compounds such as allicin that help protect cells from oxidative stress.
- Boosts immune function: Some studies suggest regular garlic consumption may reduce the frequency or severity of common colds.
- Has antimicrobial properties: Garlic can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi in laboratory studies. However, it should not replace prescribed treatments for infections.
- May help regulate blood sugar: Some research suggests garlic may modestly improve blood sugar control when combined with a healthy diet and medications, if needed.
- Provides important nutrients: Garlic contains small amounts of vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, selenium, and fiber.
How to get the most benefit
- Crush or chop garlic and let it sit for 10–15 minutes before cooking. This allows more allicin, its main beneficial compound, to form.
- Light cooking preserves more beneficial compounds than prolonged high-heat cooking.
- Including 1–2 cloves (about 3–6 grams) per day in your diet is generally considered a reasonable amount for most healthy adults.
Possible side effects
- Bad breath and body odor
- Heartburn or stomach upset
- Increased bleeding risk, especially if you take blood thinners such as warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, or clopidogrel, or before surgery
- Allergic reactions are rare but possible
If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take medications, it's a good idea to discuss large amounts of garlic or garlic supplements with your healthcare provider.
