Facilities in Dong Thap, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Nai have suspended operations or are not accepting new samples, leaving only one laboratory in Hanoi operating at limited capacity. This has created a massive backlog for necessary test certificates.

• Stringent New Import Regulations: This delay coincides with China's implementation of stricter quality control measures. Since early 2026, China has intensified inspections for contaminants like heavy metals and banned substances such as Auramine O. These new rules mean that any shipment without a valid phytosanitary certificate, which depends on the delayed lab tests, cannot be cleared.

• Upcoming June 1st Deadline: Adding to the long-term pressure, fresh jackfruit exported to China will face even stricter phytosanitary requirements starting June 1, 2026. These rules mandate that fruit can only come from registered growing areas that adhere to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and implement stringent pest controls.

• Massive Losses per Truck: A single truckload of jackfruit, valued at US$11,800 to US$23,600, incurs transport costs of about US$4,700. When delayed and forced to sell domestically, a truckload sells for only US$1,200 to US$2,400. This results in a net loss of US$12,600 to US$21,700 (320 to 550 million VND) per vehicle.

• Widespread Business Impact: The losses are accumulating rapidly. One export company reported having over 100 trucks turned back, a situation described by business managers as "absolutely staggering." The crisis has forced purchasing depots and warehouses to halt operations entirely, with one depot owner in Tien Giang province reporting a week-long shutdown.

• Collapsing Farmgate Prices: As exporters reject shipments and redirect fruit to the domestic market, oversupply has caused farmgate prices to plummet. From a peak of 30,000 - 55,000 VND/kg before the Lunar New Year, prices have crashed to as low as 6,000 - 8,000 VND/kg for high-quality fruit, with bulk fruit selling for even less.

• Embracing Standardization: The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association emphasizes that the biggest challenge is no longer a lack of markets, but a lack of standards. Planting area codes and safe farming practices (VietGAP, GlobalGAP) are becoming essential "passports" for official export.

• Diversifying Markets: To reduce heavy dependence on China, which consumes over 90% of Vietnam's jackfruit, there are calls to boost exports to other markets. Notably, while the jackfruit market to China faces difficulties, exports to the United States surged by 959% in early 2026, highlighting opportunities for diversification.

• Investing in Processing: Developing the deep-processing industry (e.g., dried jackfruit, frozen jackfruit) is seen as a crucial "safety valve" to absorb excess supply during times of low demand or export disruptions.
