1- China: The largest market by far, accounting for a dominant share (over 70-80%) of total export value. Both fresh and processed jackfruit are in high demand. Official export through the "正贸" (Official Quota)* system is now well-established after years of relying on border trade.
2- United States: A high-value market with significant demand from the Asian diaspora and growing interest from mainstream consumers due to jackfruit's popularity as a plant-based meat alternative (using young, green jackfruit).
3- European Union (EU): Countries like the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the Czech Republic are key importers. The EU market demands high quality and strict compliance with food safety standards (GlobalG.A.P., etc.).
4- Japan, South Korea, and Australia: These are other high-value, quality-conscious markets where Vietnamese jackfruit competes with Thai and other origins.
5- ASEAN and Middle East: Emerging markets with growing demand for tropical fruits.

Competitive Advantages

  • Year-Round Harvest: Due to advanced farming techniques and different varieties, Vietnamese farmers can produce jackfruit all year round, ensuring a consistent supply for exporters.

  • Favorable Climate and Soil: The Mekong Delta provides perfect conditions for high-quality, sweet jackfruit.

  • Government and Industry Support: The Vietnamese government and industry associations have actively promoted jackfruit exports, negotiating market access (e.g., official export protocols to China and the US) and supporting branding efforts.

  • Cost Competitiveness: Vietnam often has a production cost advantage over competitors like Thailand and Malaysia.

Challenges

Despite its success, the industry faces several hurdles:

  • Over-Dependence on a Single Market (China): Heavy reliance on the Chinese market makes the industry vulnerable to changes in Chinese policy, economic conditions, or border closures (as seen during the pandemic).

  • Quality Consistency and Food Safety: Maintaining consistent quality, size, and sweetness across large volumes is a challenge. Meeting the stringent pesticide residue (MRL) requirements of markets like the US, EU, and Japan requires rigorous farming practices and traceability systems.

  • Post-Harvest Losses: Jackfruit is highly perishable. Improving cold chain logistics from the farm to the port is critical to reduce spoilage.

  • Intense Competition: Thailand has a longer history and strong brand recognition. Other countries like Malaysia and India are also significant producers.

  • Branding and Marketing: While the product is excellent, building a strong "Vietnamese Jackfruit" brand that commands premium prices globally, beyond just being a commodity, is an ongoing effort.


Future Outlook and Trends

  • Market Diversification: A key strategic goal is to reduce reliance on China by aggressively promoting jackfruit in the US, EU, and other markets.

  • Value-Added Processing: The future growth is heavily tilted towards processed products (frozen, dried, canned). This adds more value, extends shelf life, and reduces perishability risks.

  • Sustainable and Certified Farming: Adoption of GlobalG.A.P., VietG.A.P., and organic certifications is increasing to meet international standards and access premium markets.

  • Technology Adoption: Use of technology in farming (precise irrigation, fertilization), post-harvest handling (modern packing houses), and supply chain (blockchain for traceability) will enhance efficiency and quality.

  • Promoting Young Jackfruit: Tapping into the global trend of veganism and plant-based diets by marketing young jackfruit as a "pulled pork" alternative.
